Logos are often overlooked by many new artists, especially in the digital age. But the best underground rock and even underground rap music artists of the past few decades have understood the importance of a logo to the band’s image.
The most iconic logos don’t even need the underground rock or underground rap music artist’s name in it, because they’re so effective. Rather, just a little drawing with few or no words will signal the artist, and that’s powerful indeed. Here are five iconic logos in underground rock and underground rap music.
The Rolling Stones’ lips: It’s hard to imagine, but once upon a time the Rolling Stones were an underground rock group. Their iconic logo, featuring lips with a tongue razzing the viewer, appeared at the same time as some of their most iconic albums.
Now, the logo appears pretty much everywhere, and has even been parodied by other underground rock groups and on other merchandise.
The Grateful Dead’s dancing bears: These colorful, koala-like bears are among the most friendly rock logos ever created, and that’s probably why they festoon so many children’s merchandise. Even fans of current similarly minded underground rock groups like to display this as a sign of allegiance to the jam band genre in general.
The Misfits’ fiend face: Like many other underground rock bands from the same punk circles, the Misfits boasted a logo that included their name in a unique font. However, they also designed a non-word logo, a creepy outline of a skull that they dubbed the “fiend face.” It now is one of the most ubiquitous logos of any underground rock group.
Wu-Tang Clan’s big W: The Wu-Tang clan approached their career in underground rap music from the beginning as a large corporation. As such, they understood the power of an effective logo.
They chose a stylized version of the “W” of their name, and this became one of the defining motifs of hip-hop fashion in the ’90s. In fact, this logo could possibly be credited for helping Wu-Tang jump out of underground rap music and into mainstream awareness.
Insane Clown Posse’s Hatchetman ICP logo: Few underground rap music artists have used the kind of impact-creating logos favored in underground rock circles. However, the Detroit rap duo Insane Clown Posse, just like Wu-Tang, understood a logo’s importance. The official ICP logo is dubbed the “hatchetman,” and shows just that: a silhouette of a man wielding a hatched.
The ICP logo at once gives you a clue as to some of the group’s horror themes, and it’s recognizable from a distance. The ICP logo now festoons a mind-boggling range of official merchandise. You can get an ICP logo baby one-sie, or sweatpants, or jewelry. The ICP logo has even inspired numerous fan tattoos.
